What does the official documentation say it does?
HighLevel’s help documentation describes Conversation AI as a customer-facing messaging agent. It says the agent can answer questions, qualify leads, collect information, assist with appointment booking, and respond on supported communication channels. The documentation says appointment booking works when booking goals and settings are configured.
The same documentation lists three response modes. Off means the agent does not respond. Suggestive drafts a reply that a person reviews, edits and sends manually. Autopilot replies automatically based on the agent’s training, settings, goals and instructions.
Agents are managed under AI Agents, then Conversation AI. The help article lists these configuration areas: bot settings (name, mode, channels, response behaviour), bot training, brand voice, bot goals and additional instructions. It also describes a dashboard and agent logs for reviewing activity. It states a primary agent can handle general inbound conversations on assigned channels, while non-primary agents are typically used inside workflows.
How is Conversation AI billed?
The official pricing page marks Conversation AI with an asterisk and says usage-based charges apply. HighLevel’s AI product pricing help article describes three AI billing options:
- Pay-Per-Use: no monthly AI subscription fee; Conversation AI is billed at token cost.
- AI Employee Growth: $50 per month per enabled location, with 1,000 Conversation AI agent responses per month. Usage beyond that is billed at pay-per-use rates.
- AI Employee Unlimited: $97 per month per enabled location, listing Conversation AI as unlimited, subject to fair use.
The pricing page also lists the AI Employee plans as optional add-ons at $50 and $97 per month per sub-account. These are separate from the $97, $297 and $497 monthly platform plans. Confirm in your own account how the add-on is applied to the locations you intend to enable.
Token billing works as follows, according to the help article. Input tokens are the text sent to the model, such as customer messages, conversation history, instructions, contact details and knowledge-base content. Output tokens are the text the model generates. Cost is the input tokens times the input rate plus the output tokens times the output rate, each per million tokens. The article lists rates per model and provider. We do not reproduce them because the article says pricing and model availability may change.
Because pricing depends on tokens, the article notes that two conversations can cost different amounts: more back-and-forth, longer replies, more history or larger knowledge-base content use more tokens. The article also says phone and text charges are billed separately regardless of plan.
What happens when limits are reached?
HighLevel’s AI usage limits article says no spending limit is configured by default, and each sub-account defaults to “Keep AI running, just notify.” In that mode AI continues after a limit and an alert is sent. “Block AI at the limit” pauses AI until the limit is raised or the next calendar month begins. If spending limits are disabled, the pricing article says usage continues and overages are billed at pay-per-use rates.
The article describes limits at agency, sub-account and user level, with a sub-account setting overriding the agency default. It lists maximums of $1,000 per month for a sub-account and $500 per month for a user. It also advises notifying clients before enabling blocking, since it can interrupt their AI usage. Agency admins can review AI spend, token usage and pay-per-use charges in the agency-level AI Suite.
On “unlimited,” the pricing article says unlimited usage is subject to HighLevel’s Terms of Service, including excessive-use restrictions, and that HighLevel may throttle, limit, require upgrades or terminate access.
What to check before relying on it
- Confirm current pricing in the account. HighLevel’s own article says to confirm in-app pricing and billing settings before quoting costs.
- Set the spending-limit behaviour deliberately. Decide whether each location should keep running with notifications or block AI at the limit; the default keeps AI running and sends an alert.
- Decide on a response mode. Suggestive keeps a person in the loop; Autopilot sends without review. The pricing page’s disclaimer says AI features require setup, configuration and ongoing human oversight.
- Plan the training content. The documentation recommends training with approved business information; check what sources your setup supports.
- Allow for related charges. Messages, calls and phone numbers carry their own costs, and the free-trial disclaimer warns usage fees may apply during a trial.
- Review the logs. Use the dashboard and agent logs to check what the agent actually said.
The pricing page states that results, performance and cost savings vary, and that nothing on it is a promise of earnings or business results. We make no claim about how Conversation AI performs. For related costs, see our guides on the free trial and pricing and ROI.
