Agency evaluation guide
Best AI Automation Platforms for Agencies
Judge an AI or automation tool by the job you need done, the features the vendor actually lists, and the meter that will bill you.

Name the job before the category
Our recommendation: start from the work, then see which product page describes it. An agency is usually trying to send a follow-up it already wrote, draft or reply in a client's voice, move data between apps, or operate several client accounts in one system. Vendors use "AI" and "automation" for all four of those jobs.
On 11 October 2026 we read each vendor's own pages in a browser and did not use the products. The table records those listings. The fit notes are our filter, not a ranking or a measured result.
What each vendor lists
| Tool | What the pages list | How the price is structured |
|---|---|---|
| GoHighLevel | Conversation AI, Voice AI, Content AI, Funnel AI, Reviews AI, and workflow automation. | $97, $297, and $497 per month, plus usage charges and AI Employee add-ons at $50 or $97 per sub-account. |
| ActiveCampaign | Email, marketing automation, Active Intelligence, an AI campaign builder, and conditional paths. | $15 to $145 per month on the 1,000-contact annual email view. Starter lists five actions per automation; higher email plans list unlimited actions. |
| HubSpot | Free CRM with an AI email writer, plus named agents on a separate AI page. | Free, no expiration, no credit card. Paid seats from $15, $50, and $75 per month. Many agents use credits. |
| n8n | Inspectable workflows, AI nodes, JavaScript or Python steps, and human approval of AI actions. | Hosted annual Starter €20 for 2,500 executions and Pro €50 for 10,000. Unlimited users and workflows. Self-hosted Community Edition is listed. |
A shared label such as "AI" does not mean the same review step or data boundary.
Details the table leaves out
HighLevel's usage asterisk is on Conversation AI, Voice AI, Reviews AI, email, SMS, and calling. Content AI and Funnel AI are listed without it. The disclaimer still requires setup and ongoing human oversight, and it promises neither savings nor results. The 14-day trial bills unless you cancel, and usage fees may apply during it. Starter includes three sub-accounts. Unlimited and Agency Pro list unlimited sub-accounts.
ActiveCampaign adds "limits apply" to Active Intelligence on Starter and Plus, lists landing pages from Plus up, and lists one user on Starter and Plus, three on Pro, and five on Enterprise. Its automation page cites over 950 apps and says suggested workflows can launch automatically. That page does not say a person must approve a send. The table prices are annual "starts at" figures. The 14-day trial says no credit card is required.
HubSpot's $15 seat price is a new-customer discount that can end. Packaging limits sit on a pricing page we did not use. The free card names Breeze Assistant, while Agent Hub says its agents are included from Starter upward and that many spend credits, so ask which one that account includes. Agent Hub says you can limit AI access and that third-party providers are contractually barred from training on your data. Professional lists an AI customer agent. Performance averages on the AI page are left out.
n8n Starter includes agents, MCP and AI nodes, and 1,600 Assistant credits a month. The homepage describes over 500 integrations and both on-prem deployment, including air-gapped, and managed cloud. A Business price was on the page, but the hosting lines were mixed, so it stays out of the table. Community Edition is the self-hosted GitHub version. The euro figures are the annual view, and Starter and Pro say the trial needs no credit card.
Questions that decide a fit
Ask whether the step is a rule or a model. Sending copy you wrote is a different purchase from a feature that writes or sends the model's words. HighLevel's disclaimer calls for human oversight, n8n describes human approval, and ActiveCampaign says suggested workflows can launch automatically. Try that feature before a client depends on it.
Price usage, add-ons, seats, credits, the contact band, and executions, and recheck the contact selector and the billing toggle before comparing two entry prices. Ask where contacts, prompts, and logs live, who can export them, and who can switch the workflow off. Name who configures the first run, who reads what it sent, and which client approved the copy. Run it on your own addresses first. This checklist is ours. We have not carried it out in these products.
Use the shortlist as a filter
GoHighLevel stays on the list when you need client sub-accounts plus follow-up and will price usage. ActiveCampaign stays when the email journey fits the action limit. HubSpot stays when you want the CRM record and will budget seats and credits separately. n8n stays when your team will build and watch the workflows. Pairwise comparisons are in the related guides.
